Can You Change a QR Code After Printing? Yes, If It's Dynamic

How to edit a QR code after it's printed: check if it's static or dynamic, change the destination without reprinting, and what to do if it's static.

You can change a QR code after printing if it's a dynamic QR code. A dynamic code points to a short link, and you can change where that link sends people as often as you like. The printed square never changes. A static QR code can't be edited, because the address is stored in the pattern itself.

This guide shows how to edit a QR code that's already printed, how to tell which kind you have, and what to do if yours turns out to be static.

Static or dynamic: which one did you print?

The difference decides whether you can edit it.

  • Static QR code: the full web address is encoded in the black and white squares. Change the address and you need a new pattern, which means a reprint.
  • Dynamic QR code: the pattern holds a short link that belongs to a QR service. When someone scans it, the service forwards them to whatever destination you've set today.

How to check: scan the code with your phone camera and look at the address it shows before you tap.

  • If you see your own website (yourrestaurant.com/menu), it's static.
  • If you see a short link on a QR service's domain (a QRZY code shows go.qrzy.co/ followed by 8 characters), it's dynamic. You can edit it from the account that created it.

How to edit a QR code that's dynamic

Every dynamic QR platform works roughly the same way:

  1. Log in to the account that created the code.
  2. Find the code in your list.
  3. Replace the destination URL.
  4. Save, then scan the printed code to check it goes to the new page.

If you don't know which account created it (an agency or a former employee may have made it), scan it, note the domain in the short link, and contact that service. The code can only be changed from the account that owns it.

How to change a QR code's destination in QRZY

QRZY is built for this. Every code you create in the QRZY dashboard is dynamic, on every plan, including Free. Print once, then change where the code points whenever you need. The next scan goes to the new page, and making the change is crazy simple:

  1. Open your Dashboard and find the code.
  2. Click the Edit (pencil) icon.
  3. Under 1 · Destination, replace the Default URL with the new address.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Scan the printed code. It now opens the new page.

The QR image, the short link and your scan history all stay the same. Only the destination changes.

Schedule the change instead of making it by hand. Under 2 · Smart rules you can tell the code to switch destinations on a date, a day of the week or a time of day. A restaurant can send morning scans to the breakfast menu and evening scans to the dinner menu, from one printed code. Time and date rules are included on the Free plan. See how restaurants run a menu that changes by time of day.

What the Free plan includes: one dynamic code, and you can change its destination whenever you need. Scans on Free see a 5-second QRZY countdown page before they're forwarded. Paid plans start at $100 a year (Starter) and redirect instantly.

What if your printed code is static?

You can't edit a static code, but you may not need a reprint.

If you own the website it points to, redirect the old address. Ask whoever runs your site to add a permanent (301) redirect from the old URL to the new page. Every scan of the printed code then lands on the new page. This is how to redirect a QR code you can't edit. It only works while you control that domain, and you get no scan counts.

If you don't control the address, reprint once, and make it a dynamic code. You can't convert a printed static code into a dynamic one; the pattern is fixed. But if the new code is dynamic, this is the last reprint. The next time the page moves, you change the link instead of the paper.

When you edit a dynamic QR code in QRZY:

  • The printed code keeps working. Nothing about the pattern changes.
  • Scan history carries on. Scans before and after the edit are counted on the same code, so you can compare them.
  • Channel links keep working. If you printed channel versions of the code (for example go.qrzy.co/<code>/flyer), they follow the new destination too.

Before you print your next QR code

  • Use a dynamic code for anything printed in volume or kept on display: menus, packaging, signs, posters, business cards. The full comparison is in dynamic vs static QR codes.
  • Make sure the account is yours, not an agency's or an employee's personal login.
  • Test the scan from the distance people will actually stand.
  • Know what happens if the plan ends. Every generator handles this differently; check before you print.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change a QR code for free? Yes, if it's a dynamic code from a service that allows free edits. On QRZY's Free plan you get one dynamic code and can change its destination as often as you need. Scans see a 5-second countdown page first.

Does changing the link change the QR code image? No. The image stays exactly the same. Only the destination behind the short link changes, so nothing you've printed needs replacing.

How long does a change take to work? In QRZY, the next scan after you save goes to the new destination.

Can I edit a QR code someone else made for me? Only from the account that created it. Ask them to transfer it or to change the destination for you.

Can I turn a static QR code into a dynamic one? Not the printed one. You can redirect the old web address if you control it, or print a new dynamic code.
