Do You Have to Pay for QR Codes? What's Free and What Costs Money

Do QR codes cost money? Static codes are free and never expire. Dynamic codes usually cost a subscription. What you get for free, what you pay for, and 2026 prices.

No, you don't have to pay for a QR code. A static QR code is free to make and works for as long as the page it points to exists. You pay when you want a dynamic QR code: one you can change after printing and whose scans you can count. That needs a service running in the background, and services charge for it.

Free codes are free forever. Paid codes are paid for as long as you want them to keep their tricks.

Free QR codes: static codes

A static code stores your web address directly in the pattern. No server sits between the scan and your page, so there's nothing to pay for and nothing that can expire. Many tools make them for free:

  • Google Chrome has a built-in generator (menu > Cast, save, and share > Create QR code).
  • Adobe Express says its codes are static and "never expire".
  • QRZY's free QR code generator makes static codes for links, text, email, phone, SMS, WiFi and contact cards, with no sign-up.

What you give up: a static code can't be changed after printing, and you can't see how many people scanned it. If the page moves, the code needs a reprint. Our dynamic vs static comparison explains the trade-off.

Why dynamic QR codes cost money

A dynamic code holds a short link that belongs to a QR service. Every scan goes through that service, which records it and forwards the visitor to your current destination. That service has to run all day, every day, for every scan of every printed code. So dynamic codes are sold as a subscription.

What dynamic QR codes cost in 2026

Entry prices from each vendor's own pricing page, checked on 20 October 2026. Prices change; check before you buy.

Watch for these before you pay

  • Trials that switch codes off. Uniqode's pricing page says dynamic codes "will become inactive" once the free trial expires. QR Code Generator's own blog says its codes "deactivate automatically when the trial period finishes". Print a trial code and it can stop working. See do QR codes expire for what breaks a code.
  • Scan limits. Some free plans cap scans per code.
  • Ads or branding on free plans.
  • Monthly vs annual. Annual is cheaper per month but paid up front.
  • What happens when you cancel. Ask before you print: are codes paused, deleted or redirected somewhere else?

How to buy a QR code

You don't buy a QR code itself. A static code is free to generate; save the image and it's yours. A dynamic code is a subscription to the service that runs its short link. "Buying" one means choosing a plan, then creating codes inside your account.

What QRZY costs

QRZY is built for printed codes that need to change, so every code you create in the dashboard is dynamic, including on the Free plan. Getting started is crazy simple: sign up and create your first code. No card, no trial clock.

PlanPriceDynamic codesWhat you get
Free$01Change the link any time, time and date rules, daily scan counts kept 7 days. Scans see a 5-second QRZY countdown first
Starter$100/year3Instant redirects, device and A/B split rules, hourly analytics
Pro$250/year25Location, language and scan-count rules, 5 hosted pages, 30 days of analytics
Business$600/yearUnlimitedA year of analytics
Elite$999/yearUnlimitedUnlimited analytics history
  • Annual billing only. One payment a year; no monthly plans.
  • The Free plan doesn't expire. It isn't a trial. Your one code stays live, with the 5-second countdown before each redirect.
  • If a paid plan ends, your account moves to Free: the oldest code stays live, the others are paused, never deleted, and you can reactivate them by upgrading again. A QRZY short link is never given to another account.
  • Need a code that will never change? Use the free static generator instead. No account needed.

Full plan details are on the pricing page. For how dynamic codes work, see dynamic QR codes. Restaurants are a typical case: a menu that changes every season, behind one printed code. See QR code menus for restaurants.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to pay for QR codes? No. Static QR codes are free and don't expire. You pay only for dynamic codes, which you can change after printing and track.

Do QR codes cost money? Making one doesn't. Keeping a dynamic code's short link running does, so dynamic codes are sold as subscriptions. Entry plans in the table above run from about $7 to $25 a month.

Are there free QR codes that never expire? Yes. Static codes from Chrome, Adobe Express or QRZY's free generator have no expiry. They work as long as the page they open exists.

Why did my free QR code stop working? If it was a dynamic code made on a free trial, the trial probably ended and the service switched it off. Static codes don't stop on their own.

What's the cheapest way to get a dynamic QR code? Use a free plan if one fits: QRZY's Free plan includes one dynamic code with no expiry date. Read the free plan's limits (scans, ads, countdown pages) before you print.
