QR Codes on Direct Mail: Placement, Size and Tracking Responses

How to use QR codes on direct mail and print ads: where to place them, how big to print, what the call to action should say, and how to track which mailing worked.

A QR code turns a postcard into a one-step response: the reader scans and lands on the offer, instead of typing a web address. It also makes direct mail measurable. Every scan is counted, so you can see which mailing, which version or which publication produced a response.

This guide covers where to put the code, how big to print it, what to write next to it, and how to track results. The same rules apply to magazine ads, flyers and billboards.

Where to put the QR code on a mail piece

  • Next to the offer. The code belongs where the reader decides to act, beside the headline offer or the call to action, not in a corner.
  • On the side people read first. On a postcard, that's usually the picture side; on a letter, near the offer paragraph.
  • Away from the postal barcode area. USPS reserves a barcode clear zone on letter-size mail in the lower right corner: 4¾ inches in from the right edge and ⅝ inch up from the bottom (USPS DMM 202). Keep the QR code out of it, and away from the address block and postage area.
  • On a flat surface. Avoid folds, perforations and spot gloss, which make codes harder to read.

How big to print it

People hold mail at reading distance, 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 in). By the 10:1 rule, that means a code at least 3 to 4 cm (1.2 to 1.6 in) wide, plus a white border. Larger formats need more:

FormatTypical scanning distanceMinimum code size
Postcard, letter, flyer30-40 cm (12-16 in)3-4 cm (1.2-1.6 in)
Magazine page30-40 cm (12-16 in)3-4 cm (1.2-1.6 in)
Poster1 m (3.3 ft)10 cm (3.9 in)
Billboard read by pedestrians10 m (33 ft)1 m (39 in)

The full table, and why a shorter link lets you print smaller, are in the QR code size guide. For colors that scan on printed stock, see the QR code colors guide.

Write a call to action next to the code

A code with no explanation gets ignored. USPS's own advice for direct mail is "a short, clear call to action (CTA) that makes it easy for them to take the next step" (USPS Delivers).

  • Say what the scan gets them: "Scan for 20% off your first order", "Scan to book a free quote".
  • Add a deadline if the offer has one.
  • Print a short web address under the code for anyone who won't scan.

Send people to the right page

  • A page made for the mailing, not your homepage. It should repeat the offer they just read.
  • Built for phones. Almost every scan comes from a phone.
  • Fast. One screen, one action.

Track which mailing worked

A scan count per mailing tells you which audience, design or offer worked:

  • One code per version. Give each mailing version, region or list its own code, or its own channel of the same code, and compare scans.
  • Add campaign tags for Google Analytics. Put UTM tags on the destination URL so visits from the mailer show up in your analytics with the campaign name. Our QR code tracking guide explains how.
  • Know what a scan count measures. A scan means someone opened the page. Whether they bought is measured on your website, not by the QR code.

Magazine ads and billboards

  • Magazines: give each publication its own code version and compare scans per title.
  • Billboards: size the code for people on foot. Never ask drivers to scan: in the UK, for example, it's illegal to hold and use a phone while driving, including at traffic lights (GOV.UK). For roadside boards, a short web address works better than a code.

Postage discounts for interactive mail

USPS runs yearly mailing promotions with postage discounts for mail that uses interactive technology. The 2026 Integrated Technology promotion gives 5% off for mail using technologies such as NFC, video in print or augmented reality, with registration open until 31 December 2026 (USPS promotions). USPS's summary page doesn't say whether a QR code on its own qualifies, so check the promotion guidebook before you plan around a discount.

How QRZY helps with direct mail

Direct mail is printed once and stays in kitchens and on desks for weeks. QRZY makes the code behind it something you can manage after it's mailed:

  • Compare mailings with channels. Print a channel version of the same code on each batch, for example go.qrzy.co/<code>/spring-a and go.qrzy.co/<code>/spring-b. Scans are counted per channel. Starter includes 3 channels per code, Pro 10, Business and Elite unlimited.
  • End the offer on time. Under 2 · Smart rules, add a Time Range (Between Dates) step for the offer period and an Always Active step after it. Scans after the end date land on your current offer instead of an expired one. Date rules are included on the Free plan.
  • Fix a broken landing page without reprinting. If the page moves, open the code, click Edit, change the Default URL and Save. The mailers already out there follow the new link.
  • See scans by day, device and location in the dashboard.

Setting it up is crazy simple: one code, one rule for the offer dates, one channel per batch. On the Free plan, scans see a 5-second QRZY countdown first; paid plans from $100 a year redirect instantly and include channels. See QR code tracking for what each scan records, and QR codes for retail stores for in-store campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a QR code go on a postcard? Next to the offer or call to action, on the side people read first, and outside the postal barcode area in the lower right corner.

How big should a QR code be on direct mail? At least 3 to 4 cm (1.2 to 1.6 in) wide for a piece held at reading distance, plus a white border around it.

How do I track direct mail with QR codes? Use a different code, or a different channel of the same code, for each mailing version, and compare scans. Add UTM tags to the destination URL to follow visits in Google Analytics.

Do QR codes on direct mail get a postage discount? USPS runs promotions for mail with interactive technology, such as the 2026 Integrated Technology promotion at 5%. Its summary page doesn't confirm that a QR code alone qualifies, so check the guidebook.

Should I put a QR code on a billboard? Only where people can scan it on foot. Don't ask drivers to scan while driving.
